Ambassador Ranjan Mathai is a retired member of the Indian Foreign Service. He retired as the Foreign Secretary (Permanent Civil Service Head) of India’s Ministry of External Affairs.

Over a four decade career, he served as the Ambassador to Israel, Qatar, and France. He has also served as the Indian High Commissioner to the UK. He also held appointments at Indian Embassies in the EU, Iran, the USA, and Austria. He has also been in the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka.

Amb Mathai is a regular media commentator on energy-particularly oil and gas- and on critical minerals, international affairs and geopolitics. He has been a regular speaker at think-tanks and academic institutions in India and abroad.

Amb Mathai completed his education with an M.A in Political Science from the University of Poona. He is an alumnus of the National Defence College in Delhi.
